The treatment was just announced by Roswell Park's Cancer Institute.
It starts with doctors extracting cancer cells from a patient.
In the lab, scientists coat the cells with NY-ESO-1, a cancer cell identifier. Then they add the drug rapamycin, which gives the cells a memory.
The cells are then re-injected into the patient where they spread, hunt and kill poisonous cancer cells. Not once - but forever.

A cure for cancer?
I'm guessing big Pharma will say no way.

I... must admit I am afraid you may be right... given how many people will lose business and potentially jobs if chemotherapy and other cancer treatments become obsolete, I fear that the medical industry may try to prevent this from happening. It would be a horrible shame to see, and I certainly hope it doesn't happen, but that little niggling doubt has been at the back of my mind ever since I started hearing about this...

I'm still hopeful. I've tried to just continue living like it was no big deal... but under the surface is that persistent worry that the cancer might pop back up again. Still, I do feel some hope reading this. Thanks for the seed, KO!

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Your concern is valid indeed.

It's been pretty obvious that the pharmaceutical companies rely more heavily on treatments for symptoms rather than researching cures. We'll see where the evil is in our healthcare system as this plays out.

I'm afraid you may be right, KO. But, if they do try to block its use, trying keep this treatment from the public may the one thing that really shatters any remaining trust in corporate "good will." It will be interesting to watch this play out, as you say.

I hope you're wrong, KO. Cancer is one of the most insidious of diseases. The faster we find a cure, the better.

Just saw this and, as a multiple cancer survivor, I sure hope that the Pharma's show some sort of humanity here. I am just 6 months past my last surgery with indications now of recurrence so it may just be too late for me but I am old and the young people need something better to look forward too than this.
